QuickReads Text Model
Text Elements by Task (TExT)
QuickReads author Elfrieda H. Hiebert’s research in text difficulty forms the basis for the QuickReads passages. TExT provides an analytical framework for the rating of text difficulty based on the text characteristics shown by research to promote or hinder fluent reading with comprehension.
Each passage in QuickReads employs the TExT framework in the design and writing, providing students maximum opportunity to build skills and acquire background knowledge, while increasing their overall reading proficiency and self-confidence.
How QuickReads uses TExT The QuickReads program is a creative and innovative application of recent research on the nature of texts used to teach reading. QuickReads passages support automatic, meaningful grade-level reading.
QuickReads passages are written at the independent level for a grade. That means that 98% or more of the words in a passage fit the grade-level curriculum. Compare this to other current textbook or intervention programs where 10-15% of the words often fall outside the grade-level curriculum.
The TExT Model of Reading used in QuickReads fosters the development of oral reading skills through the independent practice of reading short, 1-minute informational text in print or on the computer, featuring:
- 98% high-frequency words and words with a grade-appropriate set of phonic/syllabic patterns.
- 2% content-area vocabulary with repeated exposure.
- Multiple thematically linked passages.
- Informational text content that correlates to national standards in Social Studies and Science.
