QuickReads and Response to Intervention (RtI)

The recently reauthorized IDEA law requires that states must permit districts to adopt alternative models such as the Response to Intervention (RtI) model rather than simply identify children with special needs. The RtI model proposes that earlier prevention and intervention through data-based decision making will result in fewer children identified for special education classes.

QuickReads is an appropriate and effective solution for students in all tiers of intervention:

Tier 1 – Provides active fluency instruction as part of a good, solid reading curriculum for all students.

Tier 2 – Provides additional, targeted, small-group intervention for students demonstrating gaps in reading rate, accuracy, or comprehension.

Tier 3 – Provides additional strategic, intense, and sustained small group (or individual with the QuickReads Technology Edition) intervention at least twice a week for students who are more significantly delayed.

RtI calls for student performance data to be gathered easily and frequently so that the effectiveness of the instructional strategies being used can be readily ascertained. Based on the extensive performance data available from QuickReads, modifications in teaching and learning models can be made, as necessary, in order to ensure student progress.
